It’s Time to Cozy up With a Book!
By: Sara Collins
As the weather continues to get colder, it’s harder to find activities to do outside. While watching the newest season of your favorite show or rewatching your favorite movie for the thousandth time may be on your list, it may be time to switch it up. With the variety of genres out there and books becoming more popular on social media, it is harder to find a book you wouldn’t like than one you would. Read on for 5 recommendations to read this fall and winter season!
Thriller/Psychological Fiction/Suspense
If you like to be scared, but not at the level of having nightmares this genre is great for you! One of my favorite authors Lisa Jewell, has a lot of good thriller books, but one that is popular right now is called Invisible Girl. It focuses on the disappearance of a 17 year old named Saffyre Maddox.
Fiction
If you’re looking for an escape from reality fiction is a great genre to consider. One book that would be great to read while snowed in is We Are Okay by Nina LaCour. The focus is on Marin and the changes in her life that happen after her grandfather’s death.
Fantasy Fiction
In need of a real escape? Fantasy fiction will help with that! The Shadows of Heaven by KaliVictoria Wilson is a great choice for this genre. It is centered around an eighteen year old named Havena who is half-angel.
Historical Fiction/Political Fiction/Urban Fiction/Contemporary Fiction/Domestic Fiction
Love learning new things? Hitting a Straight Lick with a Crooked Stick: Stories from the Harlem Renaissance by Zora Neale Hurston is perfect for that, with the variety of topics she covers. There is talk of love, migration, class, gender, racism and sexism.
Poetry
If you have less time and like to read poetry rather than novels, A Poem for Every Winter Day by Allie Esiri might be the way to go. Even if you read it during a different season you will feel like it is winter all over again while reading these poems.
No matter what genre you pick, it is the perfect time to sit by the fire and read all day. So grab your hot cocoa and get to reading!
