Going Back: The Early 2000s Beauty and Fashion Starter Kit

One of my favorite eras both for fashion and makeup was yes, the 2000s, and it’s an era that has been recently making a come back in 2019 as the 90s fashion trend begins to fade and those 90s grunge Instagram accounts slowly start to deactivate.

Don’t get me wrong; there were a lot of mistakes made in the 2000s, but I've never been able to rid myself of my skin tight low-rise jeans or brown-nude lipstick that looks like I just kissed the nose of a dirty golden retriever.

Even for people who aren't fond of that 2000s style, it’s always nice to take yourself back into the nostalgic days of Britney Spears and Kelly Clarkson blue ‘shadow as we go through all the ways 2000s fashion and beauty has been showing itself on the shelves.

  1. Caboodle Cases

Don’t laugh. Caboodle cases are actually the cutest thing ever and are perfect for storing your makeup, especially if you’re a college student who doesn’t have a lot of space or money for makeup. Of course, their classic, pretty style and functionality are what makes them a must-have for everyone. You can now buy the re-invented caboodle boxes on their website, where it states that the new storage cases “capture the classic Caboodles look inspired by a plastic molded tackle box. They’ve shaken their fishing beginnings, though, and have a look all their own that only screams one thing: Caboodles.” These pretty cases are beginning to appear everywhere, and one was even featured on Into The Gloss recently.

2. BLUE SHADOW

I know you saw this coming — but with brands beginning to release a “pop of blue” in almost every eyeshadow palette and the recent release of Jeffree Star’s  Blue Blood palette, it’s safe to say that blue eyeshadow has been making a comeback and will likely be in style for majority of 2019, if not longer. Aren’t we all bored of the warm smokey eyes and the pink gradient eye looks, anyway?

Makeup brand Inglot has our hearts right now with their blue eyeshadow palettes. They have even partnered with Jennifer Lopez, an 2000s icon, who created the Jennifer Lopez Inglot FREEDOM SYSTEM Limitless Palette:

Our top pick from their single shadow line? Definitely the Inglot Matte Eyeshadow Refill #388, pictured here:

3. Scrunchies & 2000s-esque Hair Clips

You may have noticed scrunchies have been back in style for a little while now, but what’s catching our eye most are the pink, sparkly hair clips we’ve been seeing. In just a few months, they’re everywhere — and they’re beautiful. Our favorites are from Seoul Import, who have created delicate, sparkly hair accessories in every shade of pastel you can think of. These are definitely accessories that you’re not only going to want to wear in your hair, but decorate your vanity with.

4. Super Shiny Almost Clear Lip Gloss

A few years ago, Glossier released its ridiculously pretty hyper-shiny lip gloss that was in no doubt inspired by the 2000s. While I remember roll-on lip gloss being most infamously early 2000s, Glossier’s more precise doe foot applicator is definitely an upgrade. What’s more? The Glossier lip gloss has a “cushiony, crystal clear shine—no gluey feeling, no stickiness, no grittiness, no glitter.”

5. Dark Black Smokey Eye

When I saw Kim Kardashian promote her new smokey eyeshadow palette while sporting this look (pictured blow), the entirety of the 2000s flashed before my eyes. While people still wear smokey eyes to this day, it’s rare that you see something as dramatic and feminine as this. The lashes; the intense kohl on the waterline and tight-line; the defined way she has shaped her eyes, complete with a tiny upward wing; the smokey black shadow drawn out a quarter inch under her bottom eyelashes — what more could you ask for?

Well, I guess there is one more thing you could ask for, and luckily, we got it: Kim Kardashian has also been hitting us with a bright baby pink lip, also very early 2000s (“Lip 2” in her pink lipstick sets on her website).

The 2000s looks were pretty timeless. Personally, I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to trash my Bath and Body Works Cornflower Body Lotion and my low rise Hollister jeans — but seeing as it is 2019 now, perhaps it’s time to add a few more pretty pink hair clips and caboodle cases into my collection. What do you think?
