It’s a PISHPOSH World, And They’re Just Getting Started
We, as creatives give a lot of time to our passions.
I’m even writing this, right now, from my work desk. Waiting for the clock to hit 6. So, when I come across another creative that wears just as many hats as I do. I must give them, at least, a bit of my tiny spolight. And that is exactly what happened when I came across PISHPOSH World and the PISHPOSH girl. I had to know more. And to dig inside the brain of a Philly-based creative who have fallen deep in love with fashion. And how it coincides with creativity. Because that’s what we’re all about, here at Thee Ethereal, aren’t we?
I could give you a brief introduction into how PISHPOSH operates ( which is since 2014). But their bio, which includes, in bold, “The World Is Mine”. Should indicate what their direction is. As well as their list of major creatives who have adorned their clothing.
As, out-of-the-loop, as I am when it comes to the most popular-est of brands in Philly. I’m sort of embarrassed to say that I first came across them rather late. A not so minor collaboration with PA-born brand Urban Outfitters had glided across my instagram screen and I was immediately engulfed with curiosity.
Their bright, patchwork style of design gives even the simplest of items a freshness that easily makes it look more appealing. And their looks are something that I’d wish I had done myself! I can just image a Philly girl with a PISHPOSH ensemble. Urban, yet supremely adorable!
I had to know more! Therefore, I asked to interview them for our site. And they so nicely and enthusiastically agreed to one. So here it is. You can dive deep into the mind of an amazing creative, PISHPOSH.
Q: I feel like your name indicative of how fun and playful your designs are. Where did the name PISHPOSH come from? And what would you say is your origin (or villian origin lol) story? And can you describe who the PISHPOSH girl is?
PISHPOSH: So the name PishPosh actually was given to me by [an] old friend of mine 10 years ago. I was in my neighborhood papi store , getting a breakfast sandwich and I had a custom shirt that I had painted for myself and this friend said that looks like something you would call PishPosh , you should come out with the clothing line and call it PishPosh.
I think an origin story of PishPosh when I think of the real true beginning of its time, I think of me being in the first grade at my boarding school, Girard College, being the best artist in the class and literally that being my favorite class of all of them and just creating masterpieces since the age of six.
The PishPosh girl to me, is someone who loves their community who creates for their community while also inspiring. The PishPosh girl name came about while on campus at my HBCU, a lot of people referred to me as that.
Q: Given the scope of how much time it seems to hand paint your garments, why did you choose the medium of fashion in order to create? And what is your favorite thing about design clothing?
PISHPOSH: A piece could take me 20 minutes sometimes a whole day it all depends on what I’m creating and how detailed I want to get. Since painting was something that was introduced to me at such a young age. I just found a way incorporate that into fashion. I started becoming a fashion girly when I was in high school so I would manipulate old thrift clothes or shoes that I had with paint.
My favorite thing about designing clothing is just being able to create these one-of-a-kind pieces that wow people when the person who’s wearing it walks into the room. I love creating statement pieces that really get people thinking, “how did she do that?”
Q: If you can disclose this. How did the collaboration with Urban Outfitters come about? Because, I think, as a creative person collaboration is not only essential but terrifying. Especially with such a huge brand!
PISHPOSH: So the Urban Outfitters collaboration came about by just me networking. Someone that had modeled for my friend years ago at one of my fashion shows literally became a buyer at Urban Outfitters. They then mentioned my name and my brand to the partners and they wanted to partner with me. I remember the day I got the call it really shocked me. I started crying because back in 2018, I told YesWeekly that Urban Outfitters was the store I seen myself in. Speaking things into existence is real.
Q: Can you tell us about PISHPOSH's inspiration behind the latest collection and how it aligns with the brand's values and vision?
PISHPOSH: So the latest collection, which I called “Floral Vision” [Is a] flower design concept with an eye centered in the middle it connects back to my third eye also aligned with the quote Vision is the art of seeing is invisible to others… i’ve had moments where people didn’t see my vision. My mom always pushed me to continue after undergraduate and go to law school. She didn’t think that PishPosh could be what it could. She felt that it was more of a hobby. I think this design concept ties back not just that but also, you know, just a lot of others who may not have seen my vision for the brand or believed in me or doubted me. Don’t get me wrong though my mom was super supportive. I don’t think she just seen the depth of how big it was. This design has literally really grown on me and I say that because I usually change up my direction a lot because I like always creating new things as an artist but this one has been one that’s really been. What else can I do with it?
I think my brand values are just believing itself.. never giving up and reaching your highest potential.
Q: Is there anything that coming down the pipe that you would like others to know about? Anything special? Or maybe just a little blurb!
PISHPOSH: So 2024 marks my 10th year of being in business and I’m super excited to celebrate that I will actually be celebrating on October 5th, which everyone is welcome to attend. I’m excited to share this moment with my supporters, fans, family, and friends.
I am already working on my third partnership year with Urban Outfitters a bigger and better collection and I’m super excited for that as well. So much is to come for 2025, I’m in grind mode constantly❤️
