Is Stitch Fix Really Worth it?
By: Sara Collins and Isabella Atchick
By now, you may have come across the ads for Stitch Fix, the subscription service meant to match you with the perfect clothes. We took a deep dive into what being a member of the service is really like, what the pros and cons are, and how it differs from other shopping experiences.
What is Stitch Fix?
In case you aren’t familiar with the service, Stitch Fix, founded in 2011 by Katrina Lake and Erin Morrison Flynn, is a subscription box tailored to your style. First, you take a quiz to personalize your style preferences, including size, price range, and the type of clothes you normally wear. With your results, a team of stylists and an algorithm work to compile outfits that best fit your needs and liking. You can find options for both children and adults in their catalog.
Typically, your box will contain five items, unless you opt in to purchase some add-ons. The “freestyle” option also allows you to browse through items similar to others you have purchased before and save them for later to buy separately. Unlike other subscription services, Stitch Fix lets you be in charge of when you receive your box. Once you get your box, you pay for each item you decide to keep. (If you keep all the items, you get a 25% discount off the price of your box!) Members can also return and exchange items. A shipping label will be provided.
Your membership also comes with a daily style quiz to make sure your preferences are up to date and to give you a wider selection of outfits to choose from. You even get the option of choosing to be surprised with the items in your box or selecting items from a list. It must also be noted that a $20 down payment is required in order to get a style box. And unless you have the style pass membership (for $49/year), that $20 down payment will still be required even if you don’t keep any of the items in your box.
According to Stitch Fix’s website, “We create, deliver, and work toward a more equitable and sustainable world–we inspire and drive change across our industry and communities through our resources, influence and innovation.”
Should I Become a Member?
Sara became a Stitch Fix member and after a few months with the service, she gathered some thoughts for an honest review.
While the service is on the pricier side, it comes with many advantages. You get to put together outfits and find items similar to the ones you already love. It gives you the chance to step out of your comfort zone and find something new that may end up becoming a favorite. Another feature that is so convenient is the 30-day return window. You don’t have to rush to the post office right after getting your package. And if you also don’t like trying on clothes, the time period is perfect.
The algorithm comes with its flaws as well, as it can still recommend items that don’t align with your style preferences. And there is always the possibility of getting pieces you like that turn out to be a little too pricey. But you can get a lot more out of the service than is advertised, like freebie coupons and a space to leave feedback for your stylist. Overall, it is worth the try and has a lot to offer.
