5 TV Shows To Watch | Spring 2023

By: Adlyn Ogude

It’s that time of year again…

Your favorite show just ended, and now you're forced to try to find something good to watch in a pile of completely cringe-worthy TV shows.

Luckily for you, I did the hard work for you!

Here’s a list of 5 TV shows to watch right now!

5 BEST TV SHOWS TO WATCH

TV SHOW #1: The Company You Keep

I’m going to throw some TV show titles out at you:

Sneaky Pete, White Collar, The Catch, Inventing Anna, and Good Girls.

Have you seen any of these shows?

If you have, I’d be willing to bet you’re fascinated by the art of the con and the characters that embody it.

And if that’s you, The Company You Keep is the best show you could check out right now.

SUMMARY

It follows Charlie Nicoletti (played by Milo Ventimiglia), a con artist from a crime family that owns a Baltimore bar as a front. His fiancée worms her way into his family’s final con job - one that would net them a hefty $10 million.

This job was supposed to be it.

With that kind of cash, they could close up shop and retire early.

The con goes very smoothly, and the Nicolettis start trying to pick which island they would flee to when they realized that Charlie's fiancée disappeared with the $10 million.

All of it.

And to make a bad situation worse, the people they conned weren’t stupid and realized exactly what happened.

The Nicolettis are presented with two payment options - they can return the $10 million and pay an extra $5 million on top or they can, well, you know, pay with their lives.

To the surprise of no one, they choose the former.

On a lonely night in a bar, Charlie meets Emma Hill (played by Catherine Haena Kim), an undercover CIA agent.

And they hit it off.

Except she doesn’t know he’s a conman and he doesn’t know she has the ability to throw him and his family in jail for the rest of their natural lives.

More Reasons To Watch:

You’re a fan of Gilmore Girls or This is Us

This point can be summed up into two words: Milo Ventimiglia. With This is Us ending, The Company You Keep looks like it’s Milo’s next big project. And his acting is better than ever. Even if you don’t normally watch shows like this, Milo himself is worth the watch.

TV SHOW #2: Watchful Eye

Are you missing Only Murders In The Building?

If you are, you’re in the right place!

And if you’re not an avid watcher of Only Murders In The Building - are you looking for a good mystery show that will keep you guessing at every turn?

Because if you are, you’re also in the right place!

SUMMARY

Watchful Eye tells the story of Elena Santos (played by Mariel Molino). She scores a job as a nanny on the Upper East Side, but her intentions are a little bit more nefarious than they seem.

Elena and her boyfriend, Scott (played by Jon-Michael Ecker), plan to steal a famed priceless ruby from under the noses of the residents of the Greybourne hotel.

Except, they don't know where it is.

Only that it’s somewhere in the Greybourne hotel.

And the other thing they know for sure is that with how much this ruby is worth, both Elena and Scott would be set for life.

However, in her search, Elena uncovers chilling mysteries surrounding the Greybourne hotel, the Greybourne family that created it, and the residents that live there.

Let’s just say that trying to retrieve this ruby turns out to be harder than she or Pete could’ve ever imagined.

More Reasons To Watch:

You Want To Watch A Show About “The Elite”

Hey - there's no shame in it. Gossip Girl and Elite are popular for a reason, you know. Even though the lead and her partner, given the premise, aren’t wealthy themselves, many of the residents of the Greybourne Hotel are.

And the show puts their lives on display - even the weird parts that you wouldn’t expect. Even if the mystery storyline doesn’t really interest you, the quirks of the Greybourne residents are worth a watch.

Kelly Bishop

This point can best be summed of “those who know… know”. Kelly Bishop is in this, and all of her fans know that anything she stars in is worth watching just for her presence alone. Her character in this show is very similar to Emily Gilmore, the character Kelly Bishop plays in Gilmore Girls. Between Kelly Bishop and the mystery, tuning in to this show definitely won’t be a waste of time!

TV SHOW #3: The Resident

Word on the street is that everyone’s favorite medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy, is ending after its 19th season. Not to worry, The Resident is a show that’ll fill the medical drama-sized hole in your heart!

And for those of you who weren’t fans of Grey’s Anatomy, this show is still worth checking out.

I recommend this show to both Grey’s Anatomy’s fans and non-fans alike because it has some of the best aspects of Grey’s Anatomy while including additional aspects that could appeal to more than just Grey’s Anatomy fans.

SUMMARY

The show follows Conrad Hawkins (played by Matt Czuchry), a legendary resident doctor of Chastain Hospital in Atlanta, GA. Conrad’s time in the military has molded him into a doctor with a lot of compassion for patients and a strong disdain for the darker and more money-grubbing ways of the medical world.

So much so that he’s willing to break protocol and sometimes the law to get patients the help they need.

He felt like he hit the jackpot when he met Nic Nevins (played by Emily VanCamp). She shared his deep compassion for helping patients and irritation towards the more money-hungry individuals in the medical field. They were a good pair for a while.

But he screwed things up.

And now she won’t even look his way.

And things escalate when Conrad uncovers something super off about a treatment plan for a group of patients at Chastain.

And on top of that, he has to train a new intern working under him, Devon Pravesh (played by Manish Dayal) to become a stellar resident someday.

So to sum it up - Conrad has a pretty full schedule…

He needs to balance taking care of his patients, taking down devious figures intending to profit off of innocent patients, training his brand-spanking-new intern, and winning back the love of his life.

Crazy. I know.

More Reasons To Watch:

It Was Filmed In Atlanta

Maybe I just don’t watch enough TV to see it (doubtful), but I don’t see a lot of shows filmed in Atlanta. It’s a beautiful location that the show makes good use of, and it’s a very different feel from other shows that are primarily shot in Canada, Los Angeles, or even New York. It’s worth taking a look just for the vibe alone!

TV SHOW #4: Perfect Match

The Perfect Match is best described as an all-stars season for all of Netflix’s reality shows.

If you’re waiting on the next season of Love is Blind, Ultimatum, Too Hot To Handle, The Mole, or any other Netflix reality show, this show can pass the time.

And if you’re not, if you like the concept of it, it may be something to check out.

SUMMARY

This is a pseudo-competition/dating show where the contestants (all of which come from different Netflix Original reality shows) try to find their perfect romantic match.

Here’s how it works -

The show starts with an initial number of contestants. They all need to pair up with someone in the house that they think could be their perfect match. As couples, they compete in competitions meant to determine how compatible they are as a couple.

The most compatible couple gets to bring in two new competitors into the house and choose two current household members for the new competitors to go on dates with.

And the most compatible couple announces who’s going on a date before going on a date of their very own.

After everyone meant to go on a date has gone on a date, it’s time for everyone in the house to pair up once again. They can stay with their current partner or choose someone else.

If someone isn’t chosen by the end of the night, they have to go home.

Also, new contestants can’t just pair with each other. They need to pair with someone who’s already been in the house.

Whew. If that sounded confusing, that’s because it is.

But trust me - it becomes easier to understand as more and more episodes go by.

And it’s a must-watch for anyone who’s seen pretty much any other Netflix reality show. It has everything - romance, drama, betrayal, and more (that I’ll get into in just a minute).

And if you haven’t seen any other Netflix reality shows, I would watch at least a couple before you watch this one so that you can have a little more insight into the personalities of at least some of the contestants.

My top recommendations would be:

  1. Love is Blind (Seasons 1, 2, and/or 3)

  2. Selling Tampa

  3. The Circle (Season 1)

  4. Too Hot to Handle (Seasons 1 and 3)

  5. The Mole (Season 1)

Those are my recommendations that I think would help you enjoy The Perfect Match more, but you definitely don’t need to watch these before diving right in.

If you’re even the tiniest bit interested, just check out the first episode on Netflix and decide if it’s worth watching the entire way through. If you’re still unconvinced, here are some more reasons to watch.

More Reasons To Watch:

This Show is a Beautiful Mess

Bravo has the reality TV show formula down to a science, but it’s obvious that Netflix is still trying to figure the whole “reality show” thing out. And their experimenting has single-handedly created one of the sloppiest yet most entertaining reality shows I’ve seen in a long time.

First off, some of the contestants on this show are so competitive that you would think they’re competing for $1 million or something! And based on remarks from the contestants after the show stopped filming, I don’t think they even knew what the heck they were competing for!

But I’m sure they were hoping for more than a week-long vacation and $5,000.

Watching this show back knowing that the only prize on the line is a week-long vacation and $5,000 definitely adds a special level of comedy that few shows manage to accomplish.

And if that isn’t enough - I don’t know if this season’s budget was just on the lower end or if one of the producers thought that there would be something cute about this, but let’s just say that the dates for the newcomers to the house were pretty unoriginal for the most part.

I, personally, would love to see more of a variety when it comes to date locations in Season 2.

All we can do for now is cross our fingers, though.

The Aftershow Drama

I’m not going to spoil it because I hate spoilers, but let’s just say the drama that takes place amongst the cast after filming is over is almost like a Season 2 in itself - shifting alliances, contestants exposed, and more. Just the kind of drama that makes these kinds of shows interesting…

You probably hate that I’m being vague, but trust me - it’s in your best interest to find out exactly what I’m talking about after you’ve finished the show.

TV SHOW #5: Psych

I can almost hear you screaming “Okay! Enough with the dramas already! Can I get a comedy?!”.

Yes.

Yes, you can.

Reader, I’d like you to meet Psych.

This one may come as a bit of a surprise because there’s a detective element, but trust me - I have yet to see a show that’s made me laugh as hard as this one.

I know the other shows listed came with special recommendations. You know what I mean - the whole “watch this if you’ve seen that” thing.

But honestly, this show is so brilliantly done that a comparison like that for this show is not only impossible for me but also unnecessary.

If you like hilarious smart-aleck leads and the idea of an entire cast of well-developed characters that are funny in their own ways, then this is the show you need to queue up right now, right this second.

Summary:

Shawn Spencer (played by James Roday) and his childhood best friend Burton “Gus” Guster (played by Dulé Hill) run a psychic detective agency together, with Shawn as head psychic and Gus as his non-psychic partner.

Except… Shawn isn’t a psychic either.

Just a hyper-observant guy with great deductive reasoning.

No one knows this except his best friend, Gus, and his dad, Henry Spencer (played by Corbin Bernson).

And he kind of can’t tell anyone, either.

If he does, he’ll get locked up by the police and every case that his “abilities” helped to solve will be reopened. Criminals he’s had a hand in getting arrested could go free.

So for now, Shawn and Gus have to help the police department with every case they ask for assistance on while trying to prove to everyone that Shawn’s actually a psychic.

Pretty cool premise, right?

You can check out all of the Psych episodes on Peacock and Amazon Prime Video.

Psych Is Making A Comeback

When the Psych show ended, most fans thought it was gone for good, but it’s making a comeback. So far, 3 Psych movies have been released. The third one was released in 2021, and according to James Roday, the 4th one is currently in the works!

Now, you can watch all of the episodes and currently released movies in preparation for the 4th Psych movie!

Best TV Shows to Watch - Honorable Mentions:

Now, the 5 shows I listed are my top recommendations, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t include a few extras that definitely deserved to at least be acknowledged in this article.

Here are my honorable mentions:

Honorable Mention #1: Imposters

Ezra Bloom (played by Rob Heaps), gets conned by the woman he thought was the love of his life. Having lost pretty much everything, he sets out to find her, learning how to con along the way.

Honorable Mention #2: Community

Jeff Winger goes from lawyer to community college student overnight when his firm finds out he doesn’t actually have a law degree. Though he initially intends to cheat his way through community college and end up right back at his law firm, he creates a study group made of people that would soon become some of his closest friends.

Hijinks ensue.

It’s way more interesting (and hilarious) than it sounds. Check out an episode or two.

And if you don’t believe it’s worth a watch, think about the fact that one of the most hilarious shows of all time, The Office, can accurately be described as a show about people in an office. Seriously, check Community out.

Honorable Mention #3: Love Without Borders

In this reality show, 6 American singles travel across the world for a chance to find true love. In a foreign environment and foreign culture, they see if true love can bloom between them and who they’ve been paired with.

It’s more interesting than you would expect. I would definitely check it out if you’re a reality show buff.
